 Man's Best Friend, (roam)

If there was one job Ashe would never get tired of picking up, it was walking people’s dogs. His own two provided plenty of opportunity to get out and about, of course, but to have a whole bunch at once? And get paid for it? Best work ever, hands down.

Considering he’d just returned his last charge safely home, and had picked up his last payment for the day, Ashe was in a pretty good mood. And what better way to end a nice day at work than the best and biggest food truck burrito one could find in all of Mythril? It had been a few days since he’d last eaten anyway, so it seemed good enough as an excuse to refuel if nothing else.

Several minutes later, burrito in hand, he plopped down onto the nearest bench to do a little people watching from the edge of the park.

taking a stroll in the park was always nice. plenty of space to run around and leftovers to hunt down left by lazy picnickers. roam preferred coming here as a dog at night, with less people present to call animal control, but she was feeling adventurous today.

right now all she was smelling was that damn food truck. she wandered over to it when no customers were present to get a better whiff. man could she go for a burrito right now. she was too distracted taking in the dreamy scent to notice the man at the window glaring at her. a sauce packet smacked her in the face and her head jerked in shock.

"git outta here!" the man growled. "go on! nothin' for you unless you got some money to give me." he chuckled quietly to himself at that last bit.

roam huffed. she considered running home for some cash and coming back as a dog again just to spite him, but her apartment was awfully far from here. she turned away, resigning to stale chips on the ground somewhere.

that is, until she spotted a stranger on a bench that smelled strongly of burrito and dog. she passed by him at a distance, watching for his reaction before considering looping back around and approaching.

He’d made it maybe a third of the way through his lunch when his attention was drawn back to the truck it had come from. The vaguely familiar voice of the guy running the thing was snapping at… someone, although from where he sat he couldn’t really see until the unfortunate victim retreated.

Any will to revisit the food truck after today took a hard plummet toward “none” as he watched the scruffy mutt wander away from the scene. As good as the burritos were, there was no way in hell he was going to keep handing money over to someone he’d seen to treat an animal, even a stray, poorly. All told, the guy was lucky Ashe hadn’t caught him throwing things, too.

Now with an eye on the stray, the redhead resumed eating, working at the back of his mind on thoughts of what to do about her. He could tell he’d caught her attention by now— or at least his lunch had. If he could get her to follow him for a bit, or at least come close enough to catch, there were a couple shelters he knew would treat her well. Hell, if she was good enough with other dogs, he might even have another adoptee on his hands. It wouldn’t be too hard to take her on…

As she passed by, Ashe bent forward, holding out a hand and whistling softly to see if he could get her to come over. Considering she approached soon after, he was content to call that a success, even if he remained fairly certain that the dog’s only interest was in his food.

“Hey there,” he spoke, smiling softly. “You want some of this? Here.” Although it was a bit difficult to manage, he ripped off as intact of a piece as he could manage from his burrito and held it out for the stray.

catching someone's eye was relatively easy, so long as you were a dog running around solo while in line of sight. roam watched as the stranger she was targeting zeroed in on her as well, and she half expected to get shooed away again. proven wrong as he bent forward to whistle at her, she approached willingly, itching for a bite of that 'rito.

her neck was already stretching towards it from her position just out of arm's reach. if she was given the whole other half, it'd probably be gone in under five seconds, but she wasn't about to refuse a smaller offering. a piece was already being broken off and held out to her, and she stepped closer.

the gift was slurped up an instant later. beans and beef hit her tongue in a satisfying burst of flavor that only heightened her appetite. sneaking closer to snatch the whole thing only became more tempting, but risked getting less than what she could possibly be offered. better to be compliant unless she got an opportune chance.

still, her nose wriggled furiously to drink in the scent, suggesting to the stranger that she would not be opposed to another bite.

In the time it took for the stray to snap up what he’d offered, Ashe took another quick bite of his own, chewing thoughtfully while he watched wiggling nose and eager eyes. It was a look he knew all too well. “Yeah, thought you might like that,” the redhead murmured, dividing what remained of his burrito into halves as best he could manage. The dog got the slightly bigger half, set down near his feet on the little paper tray the meal had come in. Maybe he’d get hungry again a few hours sooner, but the tradeoff seemed fairly worth it.

Whether she went for the offering or not, Ashe finished off the last of his burrito and slowly stood so as not to startle the stray off. Though he knew full well she wouldn’t really understand him, he spoke further anyway. “Well, that’s all I have for you right now—” One step was taken in the direction of his apartment, while he kept a hand out to see if he could get the dog to follow. Didn’t want to try picking her up just yet, without knowing her temperament on the matter. “— but I can feed you more back at my place. Sound alright?”

roam could not have asked for a better jackpot than half of a fresh burrito.well she could've asked for maybe a fresh whole burrito, but beggars can't be choosers. she had to admit, receiving a good meal from someone who willingly gave it to you felt pretty nice. had the tortilla not unraveled the moment it was set on the ground, she would've scarfed it within seconds. alas, she had slurp up the individual pieces of meat and rice a bit more tentatively.

all the while she watched this all too gracious dog lover from the corner of her eye. she glanced at him more directly as he stood, taking his open hand as an invitation to follow. his promise was too tempting. mooching a couple more meals with his permission? don't mind if she did.

roam cocked her head, trying not to seem so interested in the offer as much as the simple fact that he was talking to her. she would make sure that she was the easiest dog for him to lead home.

Well, he seemed to have the dog’s attention at least. Whether it was the lingering scent of food she was after, or some sense of understanding, she followed as he began to move away from the bench. At first, Ashe moved slowly, in case his new follower found reason to hesitate, or he needed to try keeping her from running off, but as it turned out the stray was perfectly content to follow along, making the walk back to his apartment relatively easy.

“Almost there, come on,” he spoke warmly, foregoing the front doors in favor of slipping into the building through the side entrance. It would be easier to explain the presence of yet another dog in his apartment later, he figured, assuming she stuck around at all. Given how at-ease she seemed with people, he wouldn’t have been surprised if there was a family or something out looking for her. But that could be looked into tomorrow.

For now, the redhead led her up a few floors and up to his front door, pausing briefly to open the way so they could step inside. Almost immediately, a pair of eager greyhounds came racing out of the bedroom to greet Ashe, but were stopped and sent back a bit by a quick hand signal before they got too close, in case the stray was wary of other dogs.

following obediently along, roam preoccupied herself during the walk by sniffing at the various bushes and trashcans they passed. she took note of some of the landmarks they passed as well, in case he happened to live someplace she somehow had never managed to explore before. unlikely, but there were always that secluded street or two.

they arrived faster than she was expecting. she vaguely remembered this street, perhaps not the building she was being led around the side of in particular, but there were smaller quirks that she remembered making a mental note of some time ago. the flooring inside the building was smooth, uncomfortably slippery for her current shape, but there was no turning back now.

she could smell the dogs before the door was even opened. the excited footsteps inside made her a bit apprehensive, but she's dealt with enough dogs to not feel too concerned. just stay relaxed and don't look them in the eye before they started to settle down and everything'll be fine. roam slipped through the door, noting the gangly legs and long faces as they came into view. she appreciated the obedience and promptly ignored both of them to begin exploring the room the entryway opened up to. might as well make herself comfortable.

Okay… Okay! No growling or raised hackles was definitely a good start here. After the initial excitement of encountering someone new, Fiona and Bree calmed rather quickly. Curiosity did not trump obedience, and on being ignored their interest had begun to wane. Long noses twitched after the newcomer as she trotted off to explore, but that was all.

While Ashe went off to see about ‘dinner’ for the three of them, keeping watch on the stray out of the corner of his eye, Roam would find a relatively simple apartment to explore. Scuffed floors and well-used furniture made up the bulk of it, a little untidy but not unclean. A few dog toys were scattered around, along with beds. At the far end of the apartment, separated from the sitting room and a small open kitchen, were a single bedroom and bathroom, also somewhat disorderly but relatively well kept otherwise.

After a bit, the clattering of kibble on metal could be heard as Ashe filled three bowls— two actually meant for dogs, and one cereal bowl, as he lacked extras and hadn’t exactly anticipated bringing home a third dog when he’d gone out that morning. This last one he set a ways apart from the two meant for the greyhounds, whistling softly to try and get the stray’s attention so she could at least see where hers was being placed.

the place wasn't all too interesting as it turned out. not that she was complaining. if she was expecting to stay somewhere nice, roam would've tried charming one of the rich looking folk in suites and dresses over in the really nice part of town. it was still a good deal bigger than her own modest—and considerably empty—apartment. and she was here for the food anyway.

everything prone to soaking up scent smelled heavily of these two dogs, as expected. they sniffed her curiously as she wrapped up her exploration of the place. they seemed to fully begin to relax after pressing their noses into her fur for several minutes, apparently determined to memorize whatever it was they thought was so interesting. she wondered if they could pick up the dull scents of the other creatures she had shifted into recently. could they tell she wasn't quite a real dog?

the sound of kibble rattling into a bowl and her host's gentle whistles caught her attention. her eyes dropped to the bowl sitting at his feet and she huffed at it indignantly. dog food honestly wasn't the worst thing in the world, but that burrito had filled her up enough to prefer something more appetizing if she was going to be fed right away. she turned away and hopped onto the couch, settling into the cushion immediately. she could wait till he was asleep before raiding the fridge.

The rest of the evening was an uneventful affair in Ashe’s apartment. Figuring the stray could circle back around to the kibble left for her later, he left the bowl out for her, with a quick signal to the greyhound pair to leave it alone. Beyond that, the most exciting thing was a couple hours spent in front of the television. No fights tonight, or any other obligations to tend to, but there was noting wrong with quiet every once in a while.

Eventually, as Ashe retreated to his bedroom, followed dutifully by Bree and Fiona, the stray was left entirely to her own devices. For now, the three seemed to have retired for the night.

falling asleep in a total stranger's house sounded like an undertaking of its own to some, but that was exactly what roam ended up doing after a while. the television ended up being a comforting distraction. she never bothered getting one herself—seemed a bit pointless when she only ever used it as a sleeping/eating space about 70% of the time—but it was interesting to see the guy's choice in entertainment.

doing her best not to appear too focused on the screen, she watched along until eventual boredom lulled her to sleep. sure, there were plenty of much more interesting things she could've done with the rest of her day, but she was more than willing to admit that not every day had to be a party.

waking up to a dark and unpopulated room was jarring. she turned and squinted at the glowing analog clock on the microwave. looked like 4:30something. wow, she was out for quite a while. her growling stomach and itchy shifter's body seemed agree. scoffing at the still-full bowl sitting on the the floor, she returned to the kitchen. she would eat dog food when there were no other options, but there was a whole kitchen at her disposal at the moment. she reared onto her back legs as she approached the fridge, stretching into human form in the process. a sandwich was made quickly after doing some digging around and a used shirt (discovered earlier in the bathroom) tossed on because it was honestly a little chilly being naked without fur.

plopping onto the couch, she got cozy with her quick meal and reached for the remote. turning down the volume to just being audible should do the trick. was there anything even on this early in the morning?

Naturally, it was the dogs that noticed something had changed first. The movement they sensed in the other room had their attention almost immediately in the form of perked ears and raised heads. For the time being, Ashe remained oblivious, still sound asleep as the pair stared curiously through the bedroom door. Even after they got up, trotting out into the sitting room to join this ‘new’ guest of theirs, the redhead was slow to rouse.

Roam very quickly had curious company once her sandwich was finished and her place on the couch claimed, which sniffed and snuffled at her with gently wagging tails in much the same way the two greyhounds had the first time. Luckily, they at least knew better than to beg for the food in her lap, and settled down nearby not long after.

After several minutes, a third body appeared in the doorway, rubbing sleep from his eyes as he came to investigate the flickering light of the television he was very sure he’d turned off before wandering to bed. Bree, Fiona, and someone he most definitely did not recognize occupied the couch, and were all met with a few confused blinks.

“Mornin’,” Ashe greeted, perhaps oddly calm for someone who had just woken up to what seemed like a home intrusion. “… Who are you?”

she supposed it wasn't so surprising that the dogs picked up on the sudden change nigh instantaneously. as they trotted out, roam's eyes went to the bedroom door. the deep breathing of someone sleeping resounded from within, and she quickly decided the duo hadn't disturbed their owner upon getting up.

as she settled more comfortably into the couch, she offered the canines some well-earned head rubs and ear scratches for their good behavior as they sniffed at her curiously. could they still smell some of the scraggledog on her? whether they did or not, she adjusted her positioning to allow them some space to join her.

pulling out a few slices of deli meat—the sandwich was absolutely loaded with it—she held one out for each of the racing dogs to snap up as the shuffling of feet alerted her to the arrival of her third host. she turned at his greeting, mouth full of sandwich.

"wasshup," she offered with a raised hand in greeting. she finished the bite before answering the quite understandable question. "you should know, you invited me in—oh—" she held up the sandwich, waggling it in the air. "your ham was about to expire. i took it upon myself to finish it off for you."

With their usual giver of pets otherwise indisposed, the two greyhounds were more than happy to accept Roam’s affection. Tails wagged and tongues lolled from their mouths in a look that could easily qualify as a bright smile. Her reward came in the form of more snuffling and a few quick licks— both of which increased tenfold when she offered them ham. The meat disappeared in a matter of seconds.

Still licking their chops, the dogs glanced to Ashe as he emerged, but remained firmly stationed around their new best friend in case any more ham came their way.

“Uh, well, I am,” he answered, stifling a yawn. The next several moments were spent squinting at the stranger on his couch, trying to figure out what exactly she meant. He definitely didn’t recall inviting anyone home, and he certainly hadn’t gotten drunk enough last night to forget about doing so. “Thanks, I guess…?”

And, after a good while and some looking around, the situation finally clicked. They were in Mythril. Magic was everywhere, and a dog that might not necessarily be just a dog was hardly uncommon. “… Oh. Well this just got a lot more awkward.”
