Ever were the days so long it seemed whenever Micah was off to work, and his fox friend Taki seemed to still be on the fence about him. Heart breaking really, considering how much Tavi had been trying to suck up to the fuzz butt to be his friend. Yes, okay, he had given Micah chase when they first met and yes he had been a bit....hostile but you know what. You randomly get chased by a stranger claiming to be a sort of magical police force and see how you reacted to possible threat of freedom being taken.

Since they were all friends now though....again heart breaking. So that said it left Tavi ever antsy whenever Micah was not home for him to praddle on with...and made him realize just how extremely lonely he had been with out the sense of a true friend. Well okay he had known he was lonely but he always tried to ignore the feeling. Always being so rage against the machine with I DON'T NEED FRIENDS, FRIENDS SUCK! But on the inside, so very broken up about not being good enough. About being damaged. Micah made him feel hopeful that maybe he wasn't so damaged and was worth being around and not so difficult after all. That said, again, it just made him realize just how lonely he could be with out his new friend. Lonely and bored.

At first Tavi had tried waiting around an whining to himself about how boring it was just being cooped up in Micah's home...but then slowly he had started to go out on his own. It had been a bit of fear in not wanting to leave. Fear that if he left he would not be welcome to come back but Micah had encouraged that he go out and enjoy himself...so long as you know. He followed The Rules, something that Tavi absolutely eye rolled at. If only because he liked Micah so much he tried to follow the rules. But he still did things he was sure his lion friend wouldn't agree with. He couldn't help it. Animals needed liberating, okay?

Though no liberating was happening in this current moment. Nope. Unless you want to view a fennex fox as liberating while he ran merry hell around the shores of the beach with a far too large stick in his tinny little mouth. Not only that but it appeared as though he were doodling, going back inspecting, adding to it. He was already causing a bit of a speculation, people filming as they passed until he felt nervous of too many people and what Micah might think if he saw and he'd chase them away with that rather too large stick in his mouth. Well that was until a teenager decided to chase him right on back. It was a day to play chicken with a fox and a stick.

caoimhe told them to be home early today, as she had the day before and the day before that. upon leaving her apartment that morning, the little plant was filled with determination that today would be the day they don't tip toe in at an odd hour of night; today would be the day they don't worry their somewhat-guardian brown.

but as always, they get sidetracked. the city, for all its strange sunless crevices, is just so wonderful! sometimes the little plant gets distracted by unexplored spaces: once they found a building whose windows transformed sunlight into millions of different pigments; another time, they rode something called an 'elevator' up into one of the buildings that touched the sky!

today, they find a fox at the beach. weaving their way as politely as they can through the crowd, the little plant brightens at the sight of the little yellow animal, and even more when they realize the purpose of the fox's frenzied exercise is because it's drawing a picture!

the little plant draws complaints from the crowd as they scramble over the railing. they take a few minutes to search along the beach for a similarly long stick. dragging it behind them, they call out with excitement. "little fox! i want to draw too!"

looking back to inspect the fox's drawing, yue's face falls a little when they realize they had rudely dragged their stick right through the fox's sand drawing. "oh! sorry about that!" crouching, they begin carefully sweeping sand over their rude intrusion, slowly and painstakingly covering it up.

clearly they were off to a great start.

Chicken with a fox and a stick proved to have a momentary victory for Tavi because clearly this teenager had no fear it seemed to collide with such a little thing but before such an event could occur--Tavi stopped in his tracks, turned, tail lifting just before he used his front paws to dig at the sand and send a spray of it at the teenager who was now sputtering at the sand attack. Tavi used sand attack. It was super effective. If only the fox understood the meme though, but alas. He had not a clue should someone actually utter it to him.

Super effective though! And luckily the teen wasn't one to have the biggest ego because even after his friends laughed at him from the side lines he scampered off muttering about an insane fox and lets see them do better, and again luckily enough no one seemed to want to step up to the plate to see if they could best the fox. They seemed to much prefer to simply taunt their friend over his failure rather than fight for his pride. The fox turned to watch the exchange before he snorted slightly, pleased with himself and after picking his stick back up he raised his head with and air of smug satisfaction and started to--

Little fox? Did someone want some more? Only the voice was coming from a different direction. His head turned back toward where he had been drawing on the beach to see someone coming toward it with a stick of their own and for a moment he went through an array of emotions. Confusion, because people usually didn't try and interact with him in such a way, joy, and then...he couldn't help but snicker as the creature seemed to mess his drawing up....apologize...and then continue to mess it up in...an attempt to fix it? He felt no malice and it was the saving grace the creature had to keep him from instant tiny fur fury.

That and...he froze the moment the ocean breeze brought something extra his way. It brought the scent of magic and....vegetation. Such was the kind you didn't catch on a beach and it was brought from the new comer's direction. The fox could only stand and stare a moment, curiosity bubbly forward. Maybe the person was magical yes, maybe they understood plants as much as he did. Maybe they worked with them or maybe they gardened or maybe they just liked to walk through and appreciate it. Any option was good...though if it were none of the above he'd be a bit disappointed.

So as he returned, Yue didn't find himself in the presence of an annoyed Fox no no. Instead he dropped his stick and carefully made his way over so not to mess it up further and when he reached Yue he lowered his head to push their hand with his snout, nudged until they the moment that hopefully they understood he wanted them to stop, and only when that happened Tavi gripped their stick between his tiny teeth and tried to show them how to fix it rather than just sweeping sand over it.

they don't know what to expect from the little fox. anger maybe. yue remembers a time they chanced on a group of children making sidewalk drawings. they hadn't asked permission, simply joined in. the children, displeased with the sudden intrusion, pushed the little plant away. it wasn't as distressing for yue as it might have been for another person; they simply walked away, unfazed and ready for the next thing to snatch their interest away, but they still felt the hole left behind by the fun that could have been had.

thankfully, the little fox was not as confrontational as the group of children were. despite their mistakes, they feel a tug on their drawing stick, and with a wide smile across their face, yue allows the little fox to guide them.

the little plant watches with amazement as their lines add to the picture. correcting their previous mistake and expanding the sand drawing, yue oo's and ah's at the animal's skill. truthfully, they can't make head nor toe of art. no matter how meticulous they try to be, they never make anything comprehensible, not like the drawings and paintings they have seen, framed and displayed with pride.

when they finally reach the edge of the drawing, yue lifts their stick off the ground and steps back with wonder painted all over their face. sand is a crude medium, imprecise and transient, but the little fox managed to make something out of it and the little plant is infinitely impressed. "you are so talented, little fox!" yue exclaims, overflowing with happiness. sitting cross legged in the sand, they extend a hand towards the animal. "can we be friends? i'm yue!"

Far from it, he was all too happy to have someone who wanted to actually help him with his little doodles.....though doodles maybe someone might not actually call it since they more seemed like works of art in the sand. Though a bit rough it was with his guiding someone's hand with a stick. Still good, or so he thought by the time they finished it. Pleased the fox was, ever pleased when Yue rose up and with that, took the stick with him. Tavi released it from his jaws to sit back and fear at it, thick tail swiping back and forth in the sand behind him, though it was more like micro vibrations of absolute joy.

Usually, Tavi wasn't so....hopeful when it came to possibly making a friend, meeting new people. But Micah had paved way with making it just a little easier. Made him think maybe it was okay to be hopeful and with this one's kindness, their desire to doodle in the sand with him, their cheer, and their earthy scent, Tavi just....and then they were telling him their name. Sweet praises having him on a momentary high of possible promise but then the names, the actual communication problems came crashing right back. Even in his human form he was.....useless in replying. Well. He had paper and a pen but his English wasn't great nor was his hand writing or spelling and....and most people didn't know ASL.

It wavered then, that flicker of hope that seemed ever so fragile. Always had it been, but lately with that bud of actual hope, it seemed so much more easy to extinguish. And for a moment, all Tavi could do was stare at the extended hand before slowly, he stood and stepped forward to press his nose to the offered palm. Maybe it would be okay too, maybe this would be okay too. Micah told him people were nice, that some people were more accepting....you just had to find them. Stepping back again he reached for the stick, gently tugged it from Yue's grasp and then took a couple more steps back and scribbled, "Tavi." in the sand.

barely containing their excitement, yue lets out a quiet squeal as the fox puts his head in their hand. taking it as permission, the little plant gently rubs the fox under his chin, marvelling at the soft sand coloured fur and leaving behind the smell of parsley as they do.

it never occurs to them that the animal they are trying to communicate with might not understand — or that it might be strange for the animal to understand and try to communicate back. yue allows the little fox to take the stick from their hands and watches with rapt attention as more lines are drawn in the sand. letters this time, they realize after a moment of confusion.

"t... a... v... i..." caoimhe had just begun to teach the little plant to read. they hadn't gotten very far yet, mystified by the letters and all their strange sounds. some might call it a miracle that yue even managed to remember the alphabet. the little plant struggles to pronounce the four lettered word for a few seconds, scrunching their face up in concentration, but the effort is futile.

"i'm sorry little fox! i can't read!" they admit the fact with a note of sadness in their voice. "is this your name?" yue stares on the letters in the sand, repeating each one softly under their breath as they try to commit it to memory.

without warning, they scoop the little fox up into their arms, cradling the small animal as well as their inexperienced arms could manage. "i have an idea, little fox!" they start heading towards the boardwalk, intending to go down the road and into the subway. "i have a friend who can read! she will tell me your name."

With their hand rubbing at the fur beneath his muzzle Tavi's amber eyes closed, ears flickering and again the scent of parsley hit in his nose all the more strong. Magic and Parsley. For a creature apart of the supernatural world, he was so very lacking in just what was out there but he thought if anything else, maybe they were a witch. Maybe they were a witch that liked to cook? He didn't know but he knew that this one was not human. Not human but also kind. So far very kind and eager to be in his company and it made Tavi feel in moments he allowed himself to wholly immersed in it, so fucking happy.

So with a name exchanged and an offer of friendship Tavi was going to try, and maybe it would turn out okay and maybe he could successfully tell Micah he had made a friend and then maybe Micah would smile because it was nice when ever Micah smiled. At least when he wasn't wearing that silly mask. Well okay the mask was pretty but he liked seeing all of his face and seeing the range of his expressions and how his lips could quirk. Body language was a thing Tavi had to learn to read people if he was not allowed in the circle of verbal communication.

Amber eyes raised once he was finished scratching his name into the sand with the stick, dropped it off the the side he did and listened as this possible new friend started to recite the letters. Well, tried too really and where some might find it odd or laugh that Yue could not say it properly or all together Tavi only felt a wave of sympathy. At least if anything they could try to say it out loud. Tavi couldn't. He just had to try and memorize to read....which was still an on going battle. So he felt the similar pain, and when he saw the sadness that painted itself against Yue's delicately sculpt face? That didn't settle at all well and he nuzzled his face in against their thigh, trying his hardest to sooth them, to let them know it was okay.

He did pull away to try and nod at them, to confirm that yes this was his name. Waiting oh so patiently as Yue tried in a soft whisper of a voice to continue to try and sound and say his name out. Maybe he should transform? Maybe he should show him the hand sign he had come up with for his name? Or just how to spell it in more traditional ASL. Would that be easier? Would they like to use it? Sometimes people who could speak didn't like to bother to learn ASL so Tavi had learned. It had saddened him greatly. If he couldn't talk he had learned ASL was a thing that maybe he could communicate with but when it wasn't as commonly used by most people in the world well....it seemed it was just another road block against him to find a place in the world for himself to fit into.

Before Tavi could solidly decide if he should shift or not, he found himself being scooped up. His ears slicked back a moment as his small body tensed, and then loosened with excitement that Yue could take them to someone who could help....and then right into nervousness because what if this friend of Yue's didn't like him? Just because Yue seemed to like him so far didn't mean everyone else Yue knew would too. Then nervous turned to panic when he realized they were leaving and leaving was bad, very very bad bad. Leaving meant he was leaving his pack and it had all his important things in it. And his phone. The little phone Micah had gotten for him to make sure he had a line to him. His very special friendship like thingo.

In that instant he began to squirm until he popped himself free to jump down from Yue's hold, though once his paws were back on solid ground--if you can call sand utterly solid--he turned and bit gently at Yue's pant leg and tugged to try and communicate where he wanted to go, that Yue was still welcome company but that there was something first he needed to do. He made little fox noises and whines before he released Yue's pant leg and took off for the rocks he had secured his pack between. When he reached the rocks he made quick work of jumping atop and then between them to grab a strap between his teeth and tugged it up and out, then dragged it back toward Yue, who he had hoped was still waiting for him.

their grip on the fox is loose enough that a small amount of squirming allows the creature to fall out of yue's weak parsley arms. the little plant stops in their tracks, exclaiming in surprise as they see the little fox alight on the ground. relieved that he doesn't seem injured, yue turns slightly in the direction that the fox pulls their pant leg in.

confused, yue stands, glued in place, and watches the fox scamper off. he's never quite outside of the little plant's view, but at a distance, the fox just looks like a little yellow ball, bouncing among the rocks. for a moment, yue finds themself struck by a bolt of worry. what if the little fox does not come back? what would become of their new friend.

picking up their foot, the little plant decides to go after the fox, to see what they're searching for among the rocks. but the little orange dot is getting bigger again, as the little fox hurries back, returning as quickly as he left. yue lets out a breath of relief, kneeling down to receive their friend.

"oh! is this yours?" they ask, carefully untangling the pack from around the little fox. they do not question why an animal might be carrying around such a human posession. "i'm so sorry i didn't know!" their expression falls in dismay, then brightens back up just as quickly.

"is that all? why don't i carry this for you." yue wraps the strap of the pack securely around their wrist. "are we ready to go now?" they ask, opening their arms in invitation if the little fox decides the answer is yes.

The fox kept looking back to make sure Yue was following, and at first, his little heart sank when he realized Yue was still where he left them after tugging at their pant leg. He paused in his travels toward the rocks, making little....well....nothing at all. The instinct sometimes was still there....and then he felt utterly ashamed when he realized just what he was trying to do. That no sound came from his muzzle. No little calls to be made to try and encourage his new friend to follow.

Just his luck really. They didn't understand, he just needed his pack....maybe if he ran quick enough they'd still be there when he got back. So he took off again, anxious and full of worry only soon something made his heart feel light. He felt the vibrations of foot steps in the sand. The fox couldn't help looking back then, and was utterly overjoyed to see it was Yue finally coming to follow after him.

Tavi found his pack faster than Yue could really reach him to help in the search honestly, once he realized he was being following it put a little more pep in his step to simply get it found and return and then....be off to where ever Yue was going to take him to see this friend that could help. He nearly stumbled honestly with his pack being dragged in his little muzzle and when Yue knelt to help untangle him from it once he reached the lovely plan person, Tavi stood still so not to make a more a mess of himself.

When the pack was free, he trusted his new friend to keep it safe in their grasp, his little front paws popping up to press against Yue's chest as his nose bopped into Yue's while the other opened their arms for him. His way in turn, to tell him he was ready. All the apologies not necessary. He was a creature with out sound, all he had was to show and sometimes showing didn't lead all the pieces of communication all at once.

once again scooping the creature up, yue puts a little smooch on the top of the fox’s head, in between the ears, like they’ve seen other people do to their pets. a sign of affection, they are told. yue hopes their new friend receives it.

the pair garners a few strange looks, but no one stops the little plant from scurrying onto the subway with a fox in their arms. stranger things have probably happened in mythril city. while taking the subway is usually a boring and distressing affair for the little plant, the cute little fox in their lap gives them ample distraction.

absorbed, yue almost misses their stop. realizing at the last moment, the little plant roughly gathers up the little fox and his pack, and beelines for the open door, making it off just the doors are beginning to close. breathing hard more from their hurried exit than from actual exertion, they put the fox on the ground. smoothing back the fur on his head, yue offers their deepest apologies for their rough treatment.

amends made, they dance away, calling for the fox to follow. the path to caoimhe’s home is familiar enough now that yue does not get lost unless their head is particularly high in the clouds. today, fueled by their singular need to know more about the creature they’ve deemed their new friend, the trip between the subway station and her apartment is particularly short.

in no time at all, yue leads the fox into the scary metal skeleton that contained caoimhe’s adobe. turning their key, they burst in with an excited cry for her, leaving the door ajar for the fox to enter as it pleased. placing the pack on the kitchen counter, yue runs in search of their plant friend.

”caoimhe! caoimhe! i made a new friend today! come meet them and read me their name caoimhe, please! it’s —” they still in the middle of the living room, face screwing up in concentration — ”it’s t - a - v - i.” still unsure (but a little bit proud because they’re sure), the little plant turns sunny eyes towards the fox for assurance.

cranking down on editing videos takes up… quite a bit of time and effort. and being a doctor also takes quite a bit more of those two things as well. sometimes caoimhe herself was shocked at the amount she managed to get done in one day. once a week she would sneak in a free couple of hours to shoot a video, then off to work at the clinic she went, then at some point at night she would return home, water her little forest of an apartment, sit down and work on editing, and before you knew it the sun was rising again.

bless the little parsley’s heart, but they seem to have been nothing less than a handful. no wonder some of her leaves have been growing brown lately.

sometimes the fern had a hard time believing they were some unknowable age beyond a century when at times she was convinced they had just grown out of their roots not a week before she found them. she was grateful the phyto was eager to learn at the very least.

but the topic digresses.

she’s perhaps a half hour away from being finished from this week’s video—oxalises! how gorgeous they were!—when zinnia lifts her head in caoimhe’s lap at the sound of a key in the front door, and yue bursts in not a moment later.

the fern jumps in surprise at the parsley’s sudden arrival from her position at her desk near the lovely giant windows. a hand goes to her chest as she heaves out a surprised breath, hardly comprehending a thing they’re saying. the cat jumps out of her lap and flees to one of her many hiding places in the plant-covered apartment.

she rises from her seat and steps towards them, any sight of the fox entering the open space going unnoticed. “yue!” she exclaims with an exasperated laugh. slow down—what on earth are you talking about??”

Perhaps some months back, Tavi would have taken offense to such affection, but Micah made him...a little more well received in things yes. Hope and affection were thin little threads that had started to sew more thoroughly into the tattered pieces of his lonely soul. That said it did nothing but sent another hum of warmth and hope along that still gentle thread when the phyro presses a kiss between his ears, and after a moment, Tavi burrowed in against Yue's shoulder.

He hoped this was okay. He hoped his trust was not misplaced. But they smelled of earth and magic....and those two things Tavi could connect with. He hoped it was enough to be okay. He hoped....he hoped it didn't end terribly. He hoped he didn't disappoint them. He hoped they didn't see how defective he was. He hoped that they would still see him as worth while once they realized just how fucking defective he was.

The subway however, Tavi hadn't quite liked. He always avoided them in his human form. Too noisy, too much rot, too many people, too many careless people on top of that. His teeth flashed a few times when people jostled the plant who too such care in keeping him bundled to their form. It was only really when they were on the train that people even seemed to notice there was someone sitting on the subway train with a fucking fox in their lap. And there Tavi stood with a defiant little stare of "I fucking dare you," to anyone who might sneer or want to say something about it, or might want to dare try and touch him. Just because he accepted the Phyto touching him didn't mean others got to do so. He was not a pet after all. Not a pet despite affections he had just recently shared with Yue.

He couldn't utter a sound when handled a bit roughly. Couldn't even if he wanted it was nothing but a surprised huff of air though with apologies given, Tavi decided to quickly forgive the creature while they hurdled them off the train and bound to wherever it was this new person was that could teach Yue his name. His nervousness settling back in, though once he was set down he made quick work of not allowing it to cloud his mind so he could keep up in following. The moment they reach a door his nerves started to chew at him. Was his smart? Was he being too hopeful? Too trusting? Too late now wasn't it? He wasn't defenseless either...well...kind of. Fox tricks didn't come easy to a fox not well versed in his own magics. Never had a mentor or a guide in life honestly.

Slowly he padded on into the apartment, tail low, ears stuck between been perked and flat to his little skull. Large eyes looked about and much to his surprise he caught scent of something familiar to Yue but slightly different. They were kin in some sort of way or another he was sure. It made him try to fan the hope he had in a possible new friend this day, someone else he could possibly trust.....and they had at cat! He caught sight of it as it scampered. Ears perked and quickly he followed, friend friend friiiiend for sure. Furry friends were always easier to make.

hearing caominhe's voice, yue spins around in glee, skipping over to where the older fern has revealed herself. barrelling into her, the two stumble back a step as yue gives her an excited hug.

peeling themself off a second later, bright eyes bounce around the room excitedly, searching for their new friends. of course, yue finds the little fox on the ground, padding hesitantly into the sunny apartment. they let him, fighting back their desire to bounce back over and scoop the soft animal up in their arms again.

"they're my new friend!" they say, forgetting their inside voice. "their name is—" the little plant picks up a notepad and a pen from caoimhe's desk. scrunching their face up in concentration, they slow down their speech to match the speed of their careful pen strokes, once again spelling out the little fox's name.

"this! this is their name! what does it say!" raising up the notepad with pride, they wiggle their toes, barely containing their excitement.

hardly prepared for yue's energetic greeting—though one would think she'd be ready for anything they toss her way by now—a shocked "oof!" is forced from her lips, leaves rustling from impact. nevertheless, she's happy to see they've made it home safely, and in one piece. the fresh green arm she noticed on the day of their meeting still haunts her sometimes. caoimhe still can't quite bring herself to ask what sort of trouble they had gotten into that required growing an entirely new limb. perhaps it was better not to know.

the fern's eyes follow yue's towards the fox slinking into the apartment. "oh dear!" a hand goes to her chest as a surprised laugh bubbles up from somewhere within her. where on earth had they found a fox!

she blinked at the animal as his eyes followed zinnia. she has herself perched atop the fridge, staring down warily. caoimhe knew the cat could defend herself but... with only three paws she found herself shoving away the worry beginning to whisper to her. yue is demanding her attention anyway.

in the open space left below her notes, she watches as the parsley carefully writes the letters that supposedly spell the fox's name. she's beginning to wonder how a fox could've told them its name. considering yue apparently didn't name it themself. at least they're getting the hang of the alphabet, she thinks with a twinge of pride.

her head tilts as they finish writing the short name, leaning in to get a better look. "... tavi?" she says with a hesitant blink. she looks up to yue as if for confirmation, before realizing the fox might know this answer better than her green roommate.

He liked to think he was being patient with the cat. He understood wariness, he did, but he wanted so badly to be friends and so....he again liked to think he was being patient. He sat at the bottom of the fridge once the cat seemed to have jumped onto of the counter then onto of the towering appliance. His bright hues looking right up into the feline that looked down at him. Patience would have simply been sitting and calmly waiting. Patience for Tavi however was a mixture of sitting and laying with his hands on his paws before sitting back up again only to get up and circle around himself, then sit again. A sight honestly one could say it was.

The moment his name was said however he broke his gaze away from the cat who seemed to still have not made their mind up about him. Large hues shifted as his head turned to look over his little shoulder and then finally he stood and wandered back over to sit in front of the two phytos he had met this lovely day. Ears twitched. He wanted so badly, to shift. Would it be okay to shift? Would they known sign language? Though his was still choppy as hell he could still hold some what of a conversation and he had been doing soooo much better under Micah's care in teaching him.

He also remembered though, that Micah had told him people wouldn't react well to a fox suddenly turned man, so for the moment, despite how these people didn't smell human he kept it to himself and come up onto his hind legs, front paws balancing against Caoimhe's shins while his nose extended to point in the direction of the paper, trying his best to express that yes, yes that was his name.
