it was so... odd. after all these years, his mother was back i his life. this was a fact that caerus thought he'd never see. he stared down at the mobile device he held in his hand, watching the floating dots that meant the message was being sent. they'd arranged to arrive at the park, a walk through the changing trees to calm either of them. honestly, he wasn't sure what to make of all this. his mother had been his only tie to learning about who he was, though that had been taken away from him decades ago. could they have a relationship now that time had passed between them?
shaking his head, the mop of red brushing against his eyebrows, the young dragon took a step towards the area he'd asked artemis to meet him. there were so many question swirling around in the adolescent beings' head as white-covered fingers fidgeted with the edge of his opposite glove. had he started to wear the concealing pieces of fabric back then? no, his hands hadn't been scarred yet. she hadn't asked about them when they'd first met again, though cae knew it was a topic everyone turned to. even out of work, in regular clothes, he still had them on...
finding the bench that as close enough to the spot to where they were to meet, the tall escort seated himself down, zipping up the hoodie more as a chilled breeze brushed against him. he adored the cooler weather, but much preferred it beside a fire more so than not. adjusting the hat that concealed most of his fiery hair, he turned crimson eyes around him, awaiting the arrival of the one he'd missed the most.
ooc; hope this works!
a quick, thirty minute nap...
very quickly turned into three hours and waking up with a jolt when her alarm started going off. it took her a moment to come out of the haze, to turn off her alarm and check the time. when that sinking feeling of "shit i overslept" set in, artemis allowed herself a few moments to wallow in the guilt before she dragged herself out of bed to get ready in 0.000001 seconds.
okay, not quite 0.000001 seconds, but artemis accomplished getting dressed, having a drink and some food, and catching daisy for a walk all in ten minutes was a personal record that she should be rewarded for.
the unfortunate thing was, she was still late and it would be a few minutes after their arranged time that caerus would see his mother making her way towards him, red hair pulled back in a loose ponytail and herself, entirely breathless from her walking pace. the red merle border collie next to her was just as breathless, but more from excitement than panic. upon reaching a few feet from her son, artemis's shoulders flopped as she leaned forward ever so slightly.
"i am so sorry," her words were punctuated with a deep exhale and artemis leaned forward even more, pressing her hands to above her knees. "i overslept." she straightens her body, looking to the boy with a small smile. she was sure she must look as scatterbrained as she did when he was a kid. "it's good to see you."

his head tilted back, he barely heard his mother approach. eyes had closed for a moment as he took in all that nature had to offer. it was a beautiful day, one might have called it gorgeous. but whenever caerus heard that word, it made him think of work, of calling all those ladies gorgeous. it didn't interest him as much as one might think, though he did like the surprise when he denied them further involvement. his heart had always been a fickle creature, and he wouldn't deny the fact that it had been decades since someone had last melted the ice he'd placed around himself.
of course, that someone happened to be walking up the sidewalk, barely audible for the lost in thought escort. he didn't realize she was there till she spoke, and made him jump. eyes wide for a moment, he glanced the elder dragon once over, before a slow smile spread over his features. standing, he pulled her into an embrace. "you're right on time. i just got here early" caerus replied, a kiss on the cheek before he pulled back and glanced around. it was planned to be a quiet afternoon, though caerus was never opposed to an eventful day.
"don't worry about it, though. i would have gotten here earlier anyways since i took the day off" he smiled at his mother. there had been a hole in his chest for a long while, finally filled by the woman coming back into his life. offering her his arm, he allowed a smile to cross over his features. "so, where to?"
there was something about caerus's smile that made artemis feel... there were lots of words for it - weak, giddy, complete, at peace, to name a few. she was almost certain she was glowing from meeting his smile with her own, more than happy to wrap her arms around caerus's middle, breathe in his scent. everything in her life was starting to fall in place, it felt like. it was a strange feeling, but for the time being artemis was content to bask in the peace.
(how long before it falls apart, like it always does? she lies awake sometimes, worrying. she knows she's going to break eventually.)
as the two of them broke off their embrace, daisy decided it was her turn for some love, sniffing around at caerus's feet before making to jump up. she doesn't, falling back to her paws but wagging her tail and looking up at caerus expectantly, knowing that she needs permission to jump up at someone. artemis is glad the collie was young enough to learn new things.
"you took the day off for me?" artemis grins, unable to stop herself from teasing. "or perhaps, there's some other special person." like a girl, or a boy. or a non-binary being. she wasn't sure what caerus's preferences were, but whatever it was, it wasn't a problem for her. she just wanted caerus to be happy, and safe.
linking arms with the younger dragon, artemis looks around them. "absolutely no clue," her eyes drift to daisy, sniffing at the ground, pulling slightly at the lead. "though i think daisy wants to go over there." just let the dog lead the way. it was a good start.

he'd missed his mother so. the woman was the only woman he'd ever love, which said something with the amount he spoke to on a daily basis. but there was a love for her that far exceeded the love one might think. all he wanted was to wrap her in his arms and never let go. never lose her again. he'd lost her for sixty years, but never again. but, all too soon, the embrace was cut off, and he felt that empty feeling collapse within him. when they'd first met again, he'd felt like crawling into her lap, despite being a grown man. so many questions came through his head, though he would admit he wasn't against it.
for once in his life, he was going to jump head first into something terrifying. terrifying, because fate was a cruel bastard that enjoyed tearing his happiness away, though such was the fate of the freys it would seem.
his eyes moved from his mother, to the canine she'd brought with her. daisy was a sweetheart, the one time he'd met her. he crouched down for the collie, rubbing her behind the ears and giving her a kiss over the snout. "hey lazy daisy, how's my girl?" he asked her, watching the small tail wiggle back and forth. one last scratch behind the ears, he stood up rather slowly. his brother ached with the matter of barely sleeping the night before, though he wouldn't allow that to get in the way of their afternoon.
"i only for my favorite girl" caerus grinned, though glanced down at daisy after a moment. "or should i say girls" he added. his work didn't welcome much dating, though he had a few flings in the past. some he really didn't want to talk to anyone about.
of course, his eyes moved towards the way his mother pointed, daisy adamant on going over, caerus chuckled. "well, we have to please the princess" and with that, he started walking, allowing the collie to lead the way.
"how's work going?"

artemis's smile was one that could rival the brightness of the sun. within her, a feeling of contentment was settling in, only growing stronger as the days went by. since her coming to mythril, she had been met with so much that she had once thought lost: killian, her mother, her father, apollo, caerus. then there had been more people added to her life, and of course, she couldn't forget the little menace that was wriggling with joy as caerus crouched down and started rubbing her ears. a quick lick to his face before he stands back up, to which daisy jumped up too, as though she could jump into his arms, before she jumped around and started running laps around them.
it was a scene artemis could get used to.
(later, when she'd go home and be left to her thoughts, there would be that echoing thought and crippling fear - how long, how long, how long?)
musing out a noise of agreement, artemis followed after the collie, arms linked with her son and matching his pace. she shrugged a little, running through all things pandora in her head, seeing if there would be anything interesting to tell her little dragon.
"pretty good. definitely more fun based here in mythril, that's for sure," she had told caerus of her job. it wasn't something they had to keep secret from others - well, unaware mundanes had to remain as such - but it also wasn't something to shout from the rooftops. "plus - you remember i was a pirate once, right?" artemis pauses, glancing to caerus for a response before continuing. "well, turns out my old captain actually works here in mythril too. maybe i should introduce you two," though, now that she was thinking about it - that might be a little awkward. she'd have to explain to killian that this was her son, that the father isn't in the picture (devil torment his soul), blah, blah, blah...
just a bunch of stuff that she would love to avoid, but it was wrong to keep everyone in her life unaware of each other. caerus should meet her best friend, and definitely his grandparents and uncle. gods, things were complicated.

artemis: i should introduce cae to his grandparents
> in another thread, caerus meets his grandfather, doesn’t realise who he is, considers him hot
caerus has good taste, but also bad taste bc thats ur granddad
caerus lived in a constant state of surprise. surprise he'd lived this long, surprised he'd found his mother. and well, he was sure to be surprised when he found out how large his family was. grandparents he'd never met, siblings artemis had as well. it was an amazing thing, family was. the couple that had taken him in after his mother had disappeared was kind, though they weren't the most understand when he seemingly stopped aging once he hit age twenty.
he smiled down at her, wanting nothing more than to spend eternity, or a few decades, with the fiery haired woman. the love he'd always felt for her was something that he couldn't put into words, but only convey such as an afternoon out like this. the young dragon grinned at her comment, allowing a chuckle to escape his lips. well, he was sure anything could be exciting in this town, what with it attracting all sorts of good and bad. he liked knowing that someone else had found a bit of what one might call paradise.
"what? well, that's amazing" caerus replies, musing to himself. when artemis had told him about her being a pirate, he went and did some of his research. a few caught his interest, though he couldn't place them with anyone he might have known. "anyone from you past i can meet, i would love you. maybe they can dig out some baby pictures of you" he winked at her, glancing down at the collie. his hand reached for daisy's leash, allowing his mother's hands to be free.
you know, i read up on some pirates. there were a few big names that roamed the seas around the time you would have." the younger dragon started, head tilting to the side. "ever meet the dread pirate ezra? i heard he was something fierce" he questioned.
